Female Diagnostic Procedures

Female Hormonal Workup

A simple fasting blood test is performed between the 2nd and 5th day of the menstrual cycle that includes: Serum FSH, LH, Estradiol, Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH), 17-OH Progesterone, TSH and Prolactin levels. Other laboratory tests may be added depending on the patient’s history.

3D Ultrasound

A 3D pelvic ultrasound is performed between the 2nd and 5th day of the menstrual cycle to assess the uterus (uterine cavity, endometrial lining) and the ovaries (antral follicle count, look for cysts…).

Sonohysterography

Consists of a transvaginal ultrasound performed while injecting a sterile saline solution through a catheter inside the uterus, thus allowing for a complete visualization of the uterine cavity. Air may be injected simultaneously in order to assess the tubal patency.

One stop Fertility Scan (Fertiscan)

The one stop fertility is a combination of the 3D ultrasound and the sonohysterography, and allows for a full assessment of the uterine cavity, the endometrial lining, the ovaries, the antral follicle count, and the tubes, in a single exam. It is best performed between the 6th and 9th day of the menstrual cycle. A 3D ultrasound is performed before, during and after the saline infusion, and the results are immediately available.

Hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsy

Hysteroscopy is an important diagnostic and therapeutic tool in the management of infertility. It allows to fully assess the cervical canal and the uterine cavity; to treat intrauterine polyps, myomas, or adhesions; and to obtain an endometrial biopsy, when indicated, such as cases of recurrent implantation failure or recurrent miscarriages. Hysteroscopy is performed as an outpatient procedure.
